During the 2014 Ontario general election, Mr. Malhi campaigned for his daughter Harinder Malhi, who contested and won the seat for Brampton—Springdale for the Ontario Liberal Party, becoming a Member of Provincial Parliament in the 41st Legislative Assembly of Ontario.
Mr. Malhi actively supported the leadership campaign of the current Prime Minister of Canada, Rt. Honourable Justin Trudeau.
Malhi campaigned against Baljit (Bal) Gosal, Jagmeet Singh Dhaliwal, John Moulton, Frank Chilelli. Baljit (Bal) Gosal won the Bramalea, Gore, Malton Seat.

The then Prime Minister, Rt. Honourable Paul Martin upon being sworn in the year 2003, appointed Mr. Malhi as a Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Industry, The Honourable Allan Rock, with special emphasis on Entrepreneurs and New Canadians.
In 2002, Mr. Malhi became the recipient of the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal for his commitment and contributions to the Canadian society.
The then Prime Minister of Canada, Rt. Honourable Jean Chretien and Mr. Malhi, along with the Parliamentarian delegation travelled to India to inaugurate the opening of the First Canadian Consulate in Chandigarh.
Mr. Malhi was awarded The Cultural Doctorate in Cultural Philosophy, in affiliation with the World University.
In September 2002, Mr. Malhi was recognized as an Ambassador of Peace by the Interreligious and International Federation of World Peace.
Mr. Malhi served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Labour, Claudette Bradshaw from 2001 to 2003.
He was re-elected with the greatest majority of his career in the 2000 federal election over Canadian Alliance candidate Gurdish Mangat and Progressive Conservative candidate Danny Varaich.

Launch of the Khanda Sahib Stamp: Mr. Malhi was instrumental in launch of the stamp, a Sikh religious symbol, by the Rt. Honourable Prime Minister Jean Chretien and the Canadian Post Office Chairman Andre Quellette.

Mr. Malhi invited attention to the exhibition on the human rights violation in New Delhi and Punjab in the year 1984, held in the Commonwealth Room in the House of Commons. Mr. Malhi urged the Indian government to bring to justice the perpetrators of the innocent killings of Sikhs.
On January 19 1994: Mr. Malhi, the first Sikh Member of Parliament spoke in the House of Commons (Parliament of Canada) on the birthday of Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji.
Mr. Malhi was first elected to the House of Commons in the federal election held in the year 1993, defeating Progressive Conservative incumbent Harry Chadwick and Reformer, Darlene Florence in Bramalea-Gore-Malton. Prior to 1993, Canadian law prohibited members of Parliament from wearing headgear of any sort in the House of Commons. Mr. Malhi’s insistence on wearing a turban caused the law to be changed shortly after the election.
